Dredged Material Management HydroQual has the capability to provide technical assistance to the dredged material management community for a variety of dredging and port maintenance related issues. HydroQual’s ability to model 3-D hydrodynamic transport in concert with conventional water quality parameters (i.e., salinity, temperature, residence time, dissolved oxygen, etc.) provides the foundation for environmental assessment of planned channel deepening and realignment projects. In addition, HydroQual’s contaminant fate and transport and bioaccumulation modeling technology may be applied to define the link between past and present sources of contamination and the levels of contaminants observed in dredged material and dredged material test organisms today. The cause and effect relationship between individual contaminant sources and the contaminant concentrations observed in dredged material test organisms is the information that dredged material managers and port stewards need for working toward achieving clean sediments, which are cost effectively disposed of when dredged. HydroQual’s dredged material management services are further complemented by the ability to perform causal analysis of sediment toxicity. A key feature of HydroQual’s service is the ability to help managers rank and prioritize proposed remedial efforts in terms of the expected level of improvement both immediately and over future decades. |
