Kill Van Kull is a tidal strait separating the City of Bayonne in New Jersey to the north from Staten Island to the south. It is generally bounded by Upper New York Bay to the east, Newark Bay to the north, the Arthur Kill to the west and Staten Island to the south. Kill Van Kull is approximately five miles long and has a depth ranging between 11 and 50 feet below mean low water (MLW), with an 800 foot wide and 40 foot deep dredged federal navigation channel that is flanked by shallow inshore areas. According to the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the Kill Van Kull now has a baseline depth of 45 feet MLW and construction has been initiated on the 45 foot channel. The tidal range is approximately 5 feet. Kill Van Kull is a channelized waterbody that accommodates a substantial amount of maritime traffic as it represents the major waterway connecting Upper New York Bay with Port Newark/Elizabeth within Newark Bay and Howland Hook on Staten Island, both major intermodal port areas. New York State has classified Kill Van Kull as a Class SD saline waterbody with fishing identified as the best use and waters which are suitable for fish survival. The waterbody is also a New York State 303(d) listed waterbody with dissolved oxygen and organic enrichment identified as the parameters of concern and CSOs and municipal treatment plant discharges identified as the potential sources of the impairment.
