WEF Conference, Sustainability 2008: Green Practices for the Water Environment, June 22-25, Washington D.C.

On Sunday June 22 from 8:30 am to 5 p.m. Sri Rangarajan moderated a Workshop for “Sustainable Watershed Planning and Management” and Joe Cleary was a speaker at this workshop.

Sustainable Watershed Planning and Management


The workshop began with introductions to sustainability elements in Watershed Management including the principles of Total Water Management planning. Regulatory, policy, and technical challenges and guidance to overcome barriers were discussed. Secondly, some specific technical issues such as climate variations and affects on water management and water reuse/recycle technologies were discussed by highly acclaimed experts. Finally, the importance of green infrastructure elements in urban watershed planning to meet the water supply, wastewater treatment, and water quality protection goals were reviewed, supported by a wide array of case studies from across the country to discuss issues and challenges relevant to local geographic/climatic considerations. Throughout the workshop, presentations and case studies presented conclusions on how the success stories can be translated into technology transfer for widespread application. Workshop Learning Objectives:

• Sustainability elements in Watershed Planning, including Total Water Management.
• Green Infrastructure and Integration into Urban Watershed Management.
• Wastewater treatment technologies to support reuse/recycle.
• Well-defined case studies from municipal and regional watershed agencies.

On Tuesday June 24, 2008- Session 6-Planning and Modeling for the Water Environment- 8:30-11:30 am, at 9 am, Sri Rangarajan presented “Green Infrastructure Planning in Highly Urbanized Watersheds: A New York City Example”
