Sheepshead Bay is located in western Brooklyn within Community Districts 13 and 15. It is a tributary to Jamaica Bay, bounded to the north by Emmons Avenue and to the south and west by Shore Boulevard. The northeastern edge of the bay contains a small portion of Plumb Beach, part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, while Kingsborough Community College lies along the southeastern edge of the bay. A waterfront esplanade lies along Emmons Avenue and Shore Boulevard between East 27th and the community college; Sheepshead Bay is almost entirely bulkheaded. The head of the bay is characterized by commercial establishments, a subway line, a small industrial area and residences. Sheepshead Bay is a straight channel approximately 1.15 miles long, with a width of approximately 400 to 800 feet and depths ranging from two to 44 feet. The Bay is classified by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) classifies the as a Class I saline surface water with suitable uses identified as secondary contact recreation and fishing. Being one of the few remaining neighborhoods with an active fishing fleet, A Special Sheepshead Bay District (SSBD) was established in 1973 to help preserve the local character of the area.
