The Hudson River flows from its headwaters in upstate New York in the Adirondack Mountains to lower Manhattan. The Hudson River study area begins at the most northwestern point of the Bronx (North Riverdale) to the Battery at the southern tip of Manhattan and encompasses Community District 8 in the Bronx and Community Districts 2, 4, 7, 9 and 12 in Manhattan. A small segment of the river from the northernmost border of the City to Spuyten Duyvil is classified by New York State as a Class SB saline surface water with suitable uses identified as primary and secondary contact recreation and fishing. The remainder of the river within the study area is classified as Class I with secondary contact recreation and fishing identified as suitable uses. This 16-mile long segment of the river is generally oriented north/south and, although tidally influenced, generally flows south to meet the East River and Upper Bay. It has an approximate width of a half-mile within the City boundary with an average depth ranging from 30 to 50 feet in the established channels and less than 20 feet in the shallow waters. There are a total of seven vehicular bridge and tunnel crossings spanning the river including the George Washington Bridge, the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels and four rail line tunnels. A majority of the shorelines of the Hudson River study area is bulkheaded in the southern section, while much of the upper section above Riverside Park is comprised of rip rap or natural shorelines. |
