The Bronx River project area spans the southern six and one-third miles of the river's 20-mile length which extends from Davis Brook and the Kensico Dam in Westchester County through the borough of the Bronx. The river traverses or abuts Bronx Community Districts 2, 3, 6, 7, 9, 11 and 12. The Bronx River is a tributary of the East River which is a tidally influenced waterbody. For the purposes of this project, the boundaries extend from the border of Westchester County to Soundview Park where the river flows into the East River. The tributary is classified by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) as saline Class I and freshwater Class B surface waters. Class I allows for secondary contact recreation and fishing, while Class B allows for primary and secondary contact recreation and fishing. The river is oriented in a north-northeast by south-southwest direction and is generally buffered on both sides by park areas, especially within the upper reaches of the study area. More than 75 bridges and several impoundments span the width of the river which can range anywhere from 15 feet wide to 2,000 feet across at the mouth of the river. The shoreline also varies throughout the length of the river, from developed bulkheads in the south, to natural edges in Bronx Park and modified river edges in the north where its path has been altered over the years.
