Bergen Basin, a tributary of Jamaica Bay, is located within John F. Kennedy International Airport and generally flows to the south, emptying into Grassy Bay. The basin is bounded to the west by a large parcel of vacant parkland near its mouth and to east by a fuel storage facility utilized by the Port Authority of NY & NJ. Airport facilities surround the basin to the north, west (north of the vacant parkland) and east. The basin is approximately 7,400 feet in length and averages approximately 400 feet in width. Its mean low water (MLW) depth ranges from 8 to 17 feet. Bergen Basin is classified by New York State as a Class I saline waterbody for secondary contact recreation, and fish propagation and survival. The basin is on the New York State 303(d) list due to organic enrichment and low dissolved oxygen. The basin is largely channelized and primarily used for the barge delivery of fuel. The majority of land surrounding Bergen Basin is used by the airport and the Jamaica Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP) which is also located near the head of the basin.
