Alley Creek is located within Queens Community District 11 in Douglaston, Queens at the southern end of Little Neck Bay which connects to the East River. The Alley Creek study area is located within Alley Pond Park north of the Long Island Expressway (U.S. Interstate 495) and ends where the creek enters Little Neck Bay. The three-quarter mile long tidal creek runs parallel with the Cross Island Parkway. The creek generally flows south to north where it empties into Little Neck Bay. The creek is classified by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) as a Class I saline surface water with suitable uses identified as secondary contact recreation and fishing. Its width varies from about 100 feet wide near Northern Boulevard to about 1,300 feet across at the mouth of the creek. The creek is characterized by very shallow waters, between one to two feet deep, with large areas of relatively flat shoreline on both sides. In the southern portion of the study area, the creek basin naturally follows the steep contours of the adjacent cliffs.
