Newtown Creek is a tributary of the East River and is located in the northwest section of the Boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens. The creek is located between Community District 1 in Brooklyn and Community Districts 2 and 5 in Queens. The Newtown Creek study area begins at the westernmost neighborhoods of Greenpoint and Hunters Point where the creek enters the East River and south of the Long Island Expressway (U.S. Interstate 495) to East Williamsburg north of Flushing Avenue in Brooklyn at English Kills. The 3.5 mile long creek which includes Dutch Kills, Maspeth Creek, Whale Creek, the East Branch and English Kills, receives no natural freshwater flows. The creek is classified by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) as a Class SD saline surface water with designated uses for fishing only. The creek is generally oriented in an east-west direction, however, the easternmost section of the creek flows south to north. A total of five bridges span the creek including the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (U.S. Interstate 278). A substantial portion of the creek is bulkheaded. As a result, its width of between 200 to 300 feet does not vary greatly. The water depths at the confluence of the East River and Newtown Creek range from 10 feet to 40 feet deep. These depths allow for small ship and barge navigation through most of the channel.
